In books I find the dead as if they were alive; in books I foresee things to come; in books warlike affairs are set forth; from books come forth the laws of peace.
All things are corrupted and decay in time; Saturn ceases not to devour the children that he generates; all the glory of the world would be buried in oblivion, unless God had provided mortals with the remedy of books.

Books are masters who instruct us without rods or ferules, without words or anger, without bread or money. If you approach them, they are not asleep; if you seek them, they do not hide; if you blunder, they do not scold; if you are ignorant, they do not laugh at you.
~ Richard de Bury, Philobiblon, 1339

The Love of Books: The Philobiblon of Richard de Bury - by Richard de Bury (Author), E. C. Thomas (Translator)
Richard de Bury, a Benedictine monk and bishop, wrote his Philobiblon in 1339 to encourage learning and the love of books within the clergy. He was an avid collector of books, one of the first English book collecters in fact, a century before the printing press was invented. As a one-time tutor to the future King Edward III, he inspired the prince with his own love of learning and books and thereby furthered the spread of literacy and education in England.
